Frequently Asked Questions

WHOM DO YOU TEACH?

  • Adults and teens who are motivated to learn!  I work well with nerdy people who love having music in their lives.

  • I teach professional and pre-professional opera singers and other musicians, actors, and dancers; dedicated avocational choral singers and band members; and people who are brand new to singing who want to feel comfortable singing along to songs they love.

WHAT IS YOUR TEACHING STYLE?

  • Students describe me as knowledgeable and supportive!
    For more, please visit https://www.mastrianstudio.com/testimonials.html.

  • I combine traditional bel canto (“beautiful singing” over the past several centuries) with contemporary approaches and current voice science.  My 33 years of teaching experience provides you with nearly endless ways of approaching your situation.  In addition to my doctorate in voice, I am certified as a Level 4 Franklin Method® Movement Educator, and I specialize in anatomy, breathing, mindfulness, and vocal health across a variety of styles—including classical, musical theater, jazz, pop, folk, rock, and more.  I also have training in multiple acting modalities and am a diction coach, particularly focusing on Italian.

  • Sessions are client-centered and embodied (experiential – not lectures).  We build your awareness so that you learn to notice what is going on and understand why – as well as choices for what you could do instead.  By the end of the session, you will have insights into how to practice and specific tools to take with you!

HOW DO I SCHEDULE?

  • Online scheduling through Acuity/Squarespace software that syncs to my Google calendar in real time.

  • I provide you with scheduling links via email.

HOW LONG ARE LESSONS?

  • 50 minutes, which is considered a clinical hour.

HOW OFTEN DO WE MEET?

  • After the Initial Session, if we decide to move forward with ongoing work, we meet as often or rarely as your schedule and budget permits, as well as the amount of guidance that feels useful to keeping you on the right track.

  • Sometimes people work with me multiple times per week.
  • Typically I work with people every week or 2-3 times per month.  This regular commitment leads to the most consistent progress!
  • Occasionally I work with people once per month or more randomly; these tend to be singers with more advanced training who are able to work independently.

HOW SOON WILL I NOTICE PROGRESS?

  • At the Initial Session, you will gain specific strategies to create and notice changes.
  • Each person brings with them a unique set of prior habits, and it is impossible to put a timetable on growth.
  • Long-term retention and new habits generally take 12-16 weeks or more of consistent work.

WHAT DOES IT COST?

  • The 10-15 minute Contact Conversation via Zoom is free.

  • An hourlong Initial Fit session is $155, discounted to $125 through July 15, 2025.  It is a comprehensive evaluation, and a significant amount of time, effort, and planning go into the onboarding and assessment process.

  • Subsequent Drop-in sessions are $138 per hourlong lesson.

  • Monthly Subscriptions are available at a discounted rate ($115-128 range, depending upon frequency).

DO YOU HAVE ANY LESS EXPENSIVE OPTIONS?

  • I offer periodic live group classes and workshops at the Greenwood Violin Studio and online.  There will be several in July and August!
  • I have some pre-recorded group classes, as well as various exercises available on my website and on Youtube under mindvoce.

WHEN DO I PAY?

  • I must receive payment in full before each session.  Payments are NON-REFUNDABLE.  You may reschedule but not cancel.

HOW DO I PAY?

  • Payments are accepted online via Stripe (credit card) at the time of scheduling.

WHAT IS A SESSION LIKE?

  • Usually we discuss goals, warm up and work on technique through targeted exercises, and then work on repertoire.  The proportions of these vary.

DO YOU OFFER PERFORMING OPPORTUNITIES?

  • Two or three times per year I host a studio class in which students in the studio share with each other (and friends/family) the songs on which they have been working.  It is currently held at Greenwood Violin Studio but may be elsewhere in the future.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT TEACHING?

  • Interaction and growth, especially the moment of joy when a client feels tension relief or hears themself do something with ease!!
